Rōia Ārahi | Lead Lawyer x two

  • Wellington CBD location, office based position.
  • One x permanent, one x 12-month fixed term – both full time, 40 hours per week.

Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the professional body for kaiako | teachers and provides direction for the teaching profession from early childhood education through primary and secondary schooling in English and Māori medium settings.  Matatū Aotearoa is an organisation that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 

We are committed to lifting the status and mana of the teaching profession, learning collaboratively with kaiako | teachers, supporting quality leadership, and teaching, and strengthening the regulatory and disciplinary framework for the profession in a fit for purpose way.

Mō te tūranga | About the role:

We are looking for two x Lead Lawyers to join our high performing and close-knit legal team. One of the positions is a permanent contract, this will be replacing our current Lead Lawyer who has recently moved into the Chief Legal Officer position. 

The other position will be employed on a 12-month fixed term contract to help contribute to the Disciplinary Tribunal and appeals processes while matters are under the old rules work through.

In the Lead Lawyer role, you will be responsible for providing accurate and appropriate legal advice on disciplinary and competence matters.

The successful candidates will come with excellent verbal and written communication skills, enjoy problem solving and have the ability to work in an agile environment.

To be considered for either of these opportunities, you will ideally come with the following attributes:

  • Minimum six years’ experience as a practising lawyer.
  • Strong competency of tikanga, te ao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and te Reo Māori would be an advantage.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring of junior lawyers.
  • Excellent relationship management skills, building and maintaining effective relationships and networks.
  • Significant litigation experience in Court and with disciplinary bodies.
